Profile on The Mather Family



John Mather joined Boomerang in 1966 and was followed a couple of seasons later by Marj. The following year Deslee joined and in 1971 Karen joined the rest of the family and played for a couple of seasons. The whole family's court achievements are listed here.



Marj won the 1967 Club Handicap event & in 1968 she was the runner up in the same event. In 1968 Marj also won the Ladies Open Club Championship and in 1969-70 The Col Brandon Teams Incentive trophy was won by John - along with Jim Rose, Geoff Gebhard, Bob Slade, Martin England, Laurie Pashley - playing in the E1 Grade. In 1970, Deslee was the winner of the 3rd Division of the Ladies Club Event, John was the winner of the Mens 5th Division. Deslee won the Ladies Incentive Trophy in 1970 and in 1970-71 the same Trophy was won by Marj.

In 1972 Marj won the Club Handicap Tournament and the runner up was Deslee. 1975 Marj was runner up in the Ladies Senior Event.



The whole family was successful in winning Pennants. 1969-70 John was in a winning E1 Team his mates where Jim Rose, Geoff Gebhard, Bob Slade, Martin England and Laurie Pashley and also in 69-70 Marj and her Teammates Pam Kinlyside, Dawn Finch, Joan Boulton were successful in winning the B2 Pennant.



1970 John was in another winning team, this time in E2 his mates this season were John O'Sullivan, Ian White, Leigh Turnbull & Paul Finch. John was also a winner in the D3 Grade in 1971 - this time his mates were Brian Murdoch, Keith Douglas, Barry Fry and John O'Sullivan. 1972 was a good year for the Mather Girls all won Pennants Marj and Deslee won the A4 Pennant the other Ladies in the team were Dawn Finch, Pam Kinlyside & Joan Boulton. Karen was in the successful E2 winning team her teammates were Heather Story, Linda Mattiazzi, Elizabeth Cordery and Beth McGillvray. 1976 the Girls from the Gabba won the A3 Pennant, Team members were, Sue Jeffrey, Margo Davies/Larkin, Patti Hunter and Deslee.

Not sure of what year or years it was, but Deslee was selected to play for Queensland Junior Girls Squash Teams, and from memory Des also played in a Brisbane Team that used to play against Newcastle each year.
