A1 TEAMS AT THE CLUB

Report on the A1 Teams at the Club.

As far as it can be ascertained the club records of team sheets and other paper work was lost during the floods of 1974. If someone has some of the team sheets in a back room somewhere or if any of the old records from Boomerang come to light, they can be added to the site at a later date. The following report has been done from memory and with the help of some of the players in the A1 Teams.

Boomerang Club did not have an A1 team till the Winter Season of 1970. The club had nominated for the A1 grade the previous season but the association in their wisdom decided not to accept the team without an established No 1 player.

Dave Prickett was approached to join the club as he was ranked No 3 in Queensland at the time. Dave was happy to come over and join two of his brothers, Peter and Ron, who were playing at Boomerang.

Dave was added as the No 1 with the four players that were nominated the season before. They were Ken Fraser, Brian King, Chris Whight, & Wally Kwit. And as they say the rest is history and these players won the Club's first A1 pennant.

The club won the A1 grade again in the 1971 Winter Season. Team members that year were Dave Prickett, Ken Fraser, Brian King & Chris Whight.

Ken Fraser left the club for the 1971/72 Summer Season as there were not enough players to form two A1 sides. Ken played for Camp Hill as their No 1. This not only gave him a chance to get some experience at No 1 but also gave the club selectors time to approach players from other clubs to enable the club two have the two A1 sides.

In the 1971/72 Summer Season A1 grand final, the team of Dave Prickett, Bob Pareezer, Brian King & Peter Land was beaten by the Wavell Club by two games.

The 3rd A1 pennant was won by Boomerang in the 1972 Winter Season, team members being Dave Prickett, Bob Pareeza, Brian King and Frank Brand. The second A1 team was Ken Fraser, Tom McCormick, Peter Land & Ray Kettley.

In the 1973 Winter Season Ken Fraser, Bob Pareeza, Peter Land & Ray Kettley were successful in winning the 4th A1 pennant.

The next few seasons the club had two A1 Teams but there are no records to check to find out the actual make up of the teams. And as it was a long time ago opinions differ as to whom was in what team. Some of the players that joined the club to fill the two teams were Neil Horton, Dennis Buckley, Barry Green and Frank Donnelly. Home grown products who came through the grades at Boomerang were Ray Kettley, who had a few seasons in the top grade and was in the winning team in 1973, and Tom Connor who played in the A1 side in the 1974-75 Summer season.

Over the seasons when the top side required a fill in, the replacements came from the A2 or A3 teams. Some of the players used (this is from memory only) were Ray Kettley, before he moved into the top grade, Max Collins, Santo Coco, & Joe Williams to name a few.

In the 1975 Winter Season at the Gabba the A1 team was Kevin Bender, Bob Pareezer, Ray Kettley & Peter Land. This was the last team to represent the Club in the original A1 format.

The overall record of the A1 teams in 11 seasons was 4 wins and 1 loss in a grand final, which most people would agree was a great effort.

Below you can see some of the A1 result sheets still preserved. The brown colouring will indicate how old Ray Kettley, Peter Land and Ken Fraser really are.
