GREG BAKER
This Photo and story appeared in the Courier Mail way back in June 1989, when Greg was still working.
Brothel-Keeping and Horticulture are some of the trades the Queensland Government Horologist, Mr Greg Baker, above, says his profession has been mistakenly associated with," We get very strange responses when telling people we work as a Horologists" he said.
But there is not much indiscretion when it comes to maintaining the Government Clocks. The horology section, which fixes all Government departments clocks in the greater Brisbane area, celebrated its centenary this week.
The four-man team works out of a modest Spring Hill workshop, fixing clocks, watches and an array of measuring instruments.
The first Queensland Government horologist, Mr Frederick White, was appointed on June 1, 1889. Mr Baker said the recent introduction of quartz clocks meant it was cheaper for departments to throw them out and buy new ones.
So we have more of any opportunity to work on the vintage clocks, I love working on them because it is so much more interesting.
