FRANK DONNELLY
These photos, along with the story of Frank, appeared in the Bundaberg Newsletter. The article was penned when he spent a few days back at his home town earlier this year. A reporter found out that Frank was in town and organized an interview with him. Photos and the article below are about Frank's time at Boomerang and his squash travels after that.
Frank Donnelly arrived at Boomerang Squash club along with mate Neil Horton, from Bundaberg in the early 70's, they only played a couple of seasons with Boomerang, as Frank had improved quickly and was looking for a No1 Spot in a team.
Boomerang had two A1 Teams and the No 1's were Dave Prickett and Ken Fraser and as we didn’t have enough players for 3 Teams, Frank and Neil moved together to another club.
Frank improved quickly and for a time traveled the world playing the amateur circuit (he was at one stage ranked No 2 in the world). In 1979 he won the Spanish, New Zealand and Australian Titles, along with many other titles.
Frank was a member of the Queensland Squash Team that won the Australian Teams Titles in Perth in 1979. Frank also won the Individual Title which was the last Australian Amateur Title contested before the event became open from 1980 onwards. Tom Connor was also a member of the winning team in Perth.
Frank then turned Professional and competed on the World Squash Circuit for a few years. He also did some coaching in some of the countries he played in, France and Ireland were two places he coached the locals, while competing on the Professional Circuit.
