THE GREAT FLETCH

This is not a story about Squash, but there is at least one connection to the Squash Club in the book. There is a photo of Max Collins in the book, as a lot of us know Max was a top Junior Tennis player and was runner up to Bob Mark in the Australian Junior Tennis Title in 1956. Max joined our Squash club in the 60's and was one of the top players in the club. Max was a member of the Hopman Junior coaching squad back in the 50's.

This story has been written by a well known Brisbane author, Hugh Lunn, about his mate Ken Fletcher who as most of us would remember was a top Queensland, Australian & World Class Tennis player in the 50's/60's.

I have read the book and really enjoyed the story, and as some of you would be the same vintage as myself, I am sure you would also enjoy reading about his tennis story; there are many Tennis names from the past mentioned in the book. Hugh Lunn said in an email, the main reason he wrote the book was to revive memories of what a great player Ken Fletcher was.

Ken won 8 Grand Slam Doubles Titles, 6 with Margaret Smith/Court in mixed doubles including a Grand Slam, and Wimbledon Men's Doubles with John Newcombe & a French Men's Doubles Title with Roy Emerson. In 1966 Ken went close to winning the 3 titles, at Wimbledon he was beaten in a close match by the eventual winner Manual Santana in the Singles Title, and he won the Men's and Mixed Doubles.

The Proof reader didn't pick up a mistake in the picture of the Hopman Juniors running, it has Max Colling's instead of Max Collins, Hugh Lunn has advised it will be changed in any other Editions that will be published.
