LANDIE'S LIMMERICKS

A few Lines from the pen of Peter Land, which I think are quite well done, even though they would have been written after "Podge" (as Peter was known), had devoured several tinnies.

Boomerang, Boomerang, Squash was our game
Our Captain Honest Joe was a warrior of great fame.

Our No 1 was Dave Prickett a State player without peer
His volleying was a sight that led us to cheer.
His brother Peter was respected by most
He was no slouch either playing a boast.

Ken Fraser a State rep of great renown
His results would have been better if Dave was not around.
As a player he was great to watch
His forehand drive was top notch.

Brian King was a competitor known to all
His forehand was hit so hard it left cracks in the wall.
His will to win was an inspiration to his team
Shame his victories were mostly a dream.

Bill Crisp as a squash player showed very little
It was as a cricketer he displayed his mettle
As a raffler he was supreme
Sometimes leaving the marbles in his creams.

Bob Finch was all style with the odd win
May have done better hitting the ball above the tin.
He rose to great heights at Australia Post
But sadly to-day there is little to boast.

Peter Land was a bit slow but read the game well
Probably may have been better off staying home watching Tel.
Lesser known was Peter Creevey his touchshots were a delight
Such a pity he could not win on the night.

Dave Prickett said to Joe we need a number four
And I think Frank Brand is the go
Frank arrived at Boomerang as an ex-cockroach
History shows it was the right approach
Frank strode around the court like a winner
At times he made his opponents look like beginners

Our Treasurer was Peter Skelly a club man of distinction.
It is true to say his squash was of a lesser conviction.
His mate Bob McCormick was a thinker as a player
He reached greater heights as a drinker and a stayer.

Tom Connor the boy from Rocky
As a State rep was far from cocky
His determination and will to win
Forced his opponents to give in.

Richard Arnold was there at the start
He was club champion and he played his part.
A club elder, he was held in high esteem
A pennant was always his dream.

Who could forget Santo Coco
The legend abounds the night he beat
Arthur Catchpole to take the A3 crown.
It was suggested a statue be built of this great man
This did not eventuate, although it was a great plan.

Now we have come to Allan Griffiths his story is sad
As a player/bushranger, was not to bad
But while the truth should be told
And he was winning pennants like a star
His opponents were well below par.

Our President was Col Brandon
He was from the old school
A local resident he was nobody's fool.
On finals nights he was always around
Offering advice and calming players down.

Another good bloke was Joe McKenna who was well read
His serve hit well landed on your head.
As a squash player he had few regrets
But it was his bloody serve we cannot forget.

Jeffrey George our mate was a bossy little bloke.
While punting on the nags nearly sent him broke.
He thought he was an ace with the girls
His favourite present being a pearl necklace.

Max Collins played many sports and beat the best
At tennis he was away ahead of the rest
It was at Milton I first saw him play
Linton Cup Tennis the Queensland way
Max won in straight sets on the day
The other bloke from South Aussie spat the dummy
The rest of the South Aussie Team was hiding in the dunny.

Ray Smith was a popular player
Also known as the club driver
The club car his dirty green Zephyr
Was not worth a fiver.
A Gabba President he reached the top
Few will remember him playing a drop shot.

It would be remiss of me not to mention Don Chilcott
As a player he was game
As a person and a club man
He should have been in the Hall of Fame.

Frank Donnelly was not at the club long
It was there he learnt the Boomerang Song
Although he went on to win an Aussie Title
We still claim him as one of Joe Williams's disciples.

Remember the Red Baron and that flaming red hair
When he hit his forehand it sent shock waves through the air
That he is in the squash business is old hat.
So let's leave it at that.

We took a team to North Qld, on a great train ride
Our Manager the Chicken Man took great pride in this side.
The hospitality was overwhelming and we did not win a game
This did not concern the Chicken Man
Who thought it was no shame.

The Team that traveled by rail to Townsville & Cairns was.
Joe Williams, Peter Land, Ray Smith, Jeff Seipel and of course
Our beloved Manager Doug Loveday, the Chicken Man.

We met up with Dave Prickett, Ken Fraser & Craig Gibson
Who traveled by plane to Cairns, this group were quite
Successful and performed well in the Tournament.

The Team that went by Rail did not win a game
But it was the after games drinking Sessions
Where they lived up to the Boomerang Name.

A good player was Ray Kettley whose record speaks for itself
The proof of the pudding sits on the shelf
His forehand was sound his backhand okay
It was as a Gabba Club Captain Ray led the way.

There are many I have missed for no apparent reason
For now I have come to the end of my silly season.
For now I have written my last edition.
It is time for others to carry on the tradition.
