JOE'S STUBBY HOLDER

Remember the Gabba Stubby Holders.

Most of you members, who liked a drink or two after running around the courts getting a thirst up, would remember when the Gabba first opened there was someone in the club that was quite handy with leather. His name was Trevor Hardwick and he made stubby holders for any member who wished to own one. He normally carved the Gabba Club Badge and the members name on the holder but sometimes carved something comical on the holder to denote who it belonged to.

Over the year or so Joe Williams was at the club, he became quite infamous for his habit of relieving himself just outside the courts. This was only done when the toilets had been closed for the night, and in Joe’s time they never had a toilet upstairs. On more than one occasion he was sprung in the act of relieving himself, mostly on an industrial waste bin that was kept just outside the court’s main door in the car park.

Normally on the stubby holder would be a drawing of the Club Badge with the members name underneath it. Sometimes he put a drawing or a bit of a story on the holder about the owner of the stubby holder.

In Joe’s case there was a drawing of him in his squash gear (it wasn’t a very good likeness) relieving himself against the industrial bin. Scroll down to see what was engraved on Joe’s stubby holder.
