THE WARRIOR

Snap Shot of Joe "Warrior" Williams Captain of the Boomerang Club in the 60s/70s.

Not a lot is known of "Warrior" Williams prior to him joining the Boomerang Squash Club. We do know "Warrior" was of NZ. Heritage, and lived his early life in country Queensland.

Apparently "Warrior" was a very good sportsman in his younger days, Playing A Grade rugby union, cricket, hockey, basket ball, water polo and tennis, He was also a state swimming champion "breaststroke".

"Warrior" was called up for National Service, where he excelled, reaching the rank of "Private", He was also division boxing & wrestling champion in the Bantamweight division.

On joining the Boomerang Squash Club, "Warrior" after a couple of seasons was made club captain, calling upon his army experience as a strict disciplinarian he immediately set about laying the foundations which made Boomerang the most successful club of the 60s-70s.

It is said that Wayne Bennett used "Warrior's" blue print as the foundation stone for the Bronco's success.

Some of the "Warrior's" radical training drills were ahead of their time. After fixtures finished approximately at midnight, he organised the following activities in Paul's car park.

Fence Walking..... To improve balance and agility.

Tree climbing blind folded..... To overcome fear, and also to build confidence.

Racket Throwing..... To improve eye and hand co- ordination.

Chipping Golf balls into Car Boots..... To improve touch and finesse.

Night circuit training around Paul's car park..... To improve reflexes speed and endurance.

"Warrior's" Vice Captains are listed here - Peter Land, Bob Ford, Peter Creevey. Not a lot can be said for this group as they did nothing.

"Warrior" was a leader in every sense; he led by example always being the first to score, sometimes scoring 2 or 3 times on fixture nights, while his teamates had adjourned to the Coronation Hotel.

This brief non edited snap shot of Joe's time at Boomerang does not do justice to a great captain and a great Queenslander (even though he has lived in Perth for the last 34 years).

The information obtained to write this tribute was obtained from dubious sources, namely Peter Land, Brian King, Peter Creevey, & Bob McCormick.

Written by Peter Land in conjunction with the above members at the Chalk Hotel.
