NOT THE CHICKEN MAN BUT THE FISH MAN
Alf Hogan’s 60th Birthday
Alf celebrated his 60th birthday on the 13th May while on a trip to the Kimberley’s and below are a few photos of that trip. Alf joined Boomerang in the early 70’s and played his last season for the Gabba in the winter of 1980. He had worked his way up to B2 grade by the time he moved away from Brisbane.
Some of Alf’s on court achievements are as follows: 1976 winning 3rd division of the Handicap Plate event, 1977 won 4th division of the Club Championships and in 1980 was the winner of division 2 of the Handicap Plate event.
Alf won a couple of Pennants, the first in 1975/76 Summer season as part of the E4 team and the 1977/78 Summer season was a member of the winning D2 team.
Alf was awarded the Bob Turner Memorial Trophy in 1976, that trophy was often awarded to members who where not on committee’s but served the club in other ways.
Alf was an understudy to Bill Crisp in organizing and running the pub raffles over many years. Though there would have been a big age difference between Alf and Bill, they became pretty good mates and the pub raffles were in good hands with Bill and Alf at the helm.
Alf at one time was the editor of the Puntimal and normally it was not advertised who the editors of the Puntimal were. This created many a discussion down at the pubs over the years as to who the editor at the time may have been. Alf also created the article under “Pisces” so to all you members who got a ribbing over the years now is the chance to square the ledger with Pisces.
Alf met his wife Kay (Greer) at the Gabba Squash Club in 1979/80. Alf was having a few beers with Graham Field after practice one Monday night in the club room discussing their next crabbing and fishing trip and this charming redhead butted in and said can I come – as the saying goes the rest is history. Alf and Graham are still best of mates to this day.
Alf moved to the Atherton Tablelands to work as a marine biologist in September 1980 and was joined by Kay after their wedding on 3rd September 1983. A home was built in Yungaburra and they took up residency in March 1986, they can still be found there today. They have a son Adam and two daughters Carmel and Belinda.
Kay joined the Gabba Squash Club in 1979 and left in the Winter Season of 1983 when she was playing C2. Kay won the Plate event in division 4 of the 1979 Club Championships and in 1980 she was runner-up in division 3 of the championships. In 1981 Kay was the winner of the Plate event in division 3 of the Handicap tournament. Kay was a very active member of the Club, regularly seen at social functions and not afraid to get in a give a hand with any chores that had to be done. In 1982/83 she was part of the management committee and held the position of Promotions Manager.
